Discord Migration + Price Cut
We will be moving the Discord to Towns Protocol, a decentralized web3 version of Discord that has raised over $40M in funding from tier 1 VCs (a16z, Framework, Coinbase Ventures).
Why?
1) Web3 Payments flow: The current sign up and payments flow for running Discord community is extremely cumbersome and requires a lot of manual work which leads to a backlog of unanswered support tickets. Towns manages this more cleanly by automating the adding and removal of users who have paid.
2) Investing in Decentralized Social + Airdrop Discord is where web3 communities typically live, but Discord has completely failed to support and integrate any web3 features. We believe Towns is building a what will ultimately be a better experiences for our community and already has better web3 features (integrated trading, tipping, and NFT gating). Towns will be airdropping $TOWN tokens to early users. While we can’t predict the price of $TOWN, we hope that our community members will be rewarded enough to help offset some of our membership cost.
3) Web3 features
a) Integrated trading: Simply type any ticker symbol into a channel and easily buy/sell from your Towns account.
b) Tipping: Tip other members for their contributions and content. Someone makes you a ton of money on a trade idea? Leave them a tip. Post good content for the community? Get tipped.
What’s changing?
Price: Good news, the price will be going down for the first 500 people.
Current Discord price: $49/mo or $499 per year.
New Towns price: 0.1 ETH per year (currently ~$290)
After the first 500 people sign up, the price will go to 1 ETH. (Note: there is not currently a monthly payment option for Towns, but you can pay with crypto or credit card.)
Email newsletter: Our email newsletter will still go out on occasion but will be free. Most content will be posted to Towns.
Tiers: @everyone 1 tier level, all access to everything. Some missing features (for now)

We’ll be winding down the Discord and will be fully transitioned to Towns over the next 30 days.

Once you join, be sure to cancel your existing subscription at sistine.ai so you are not double charged. Some of you may be upset because of the friction of moving or having to pay yearly instead of monthly. That’s totally okay - you do not have to make the move, you can always cancel and join us later on if you so choose, though earlier members will be able to rack up more points for $TOWNS airdrops.
